Meeting Alexi.

Just the other day, I was informed by Firefly about Alexi, this guy at her school who she is good friends with. Today, he is coming over to talk to Firefly about what happened and teenage stuff. It is awkward having a stranger who I don’t know entering my sanctuary, my home. I have had situations in the past where people who are not as they seem and I didn’t want that to happen to Firefly. So I had my guard up, as per usual.

Alexi came around 4:00. Decent enough fellow, moderately tall, green squintly eyes, spiky hair (brown obviously) and, one of the best jawlines I had ever seen on anyone, excluding Johnny Depp, of course… I welcomed him in and introduced myself, he returned with ’Здравствуй, Paд тe6я видеть. Как поживаешь? Меня зовут’…

(For the non Russian speaking, ”Hello, nice to see you. How are you? My name is …is pronounced, ZDRAV-stvuy, Rat teebya veedet’. Kak pazhivayesh? Meenya zavoot…)

I stopped him before he could answer with, ‘I know who you are and it is nice to meet you also. I do have a tendency to speak English quite well, so please. I need to keep practicing my English more than Russian.’ He smiled and blushed, he Russian was very good and quite formally spoken. I moved slightly to the side and gestured for him to come in, I offer him to sit and a drink, he sat and kindly declined for a drink. While waiting for Firefly to come out, we started to chat. We were discussing where we are from , where abouts we lived and if we had ever been to certain areas of Moscow or St. Petersberg. He became very excited when we began discussing Arkhangel, ‘It’s very beautiful isn’t it? I have been to most of every town in Russia and that is my favourite.’ I replied, ‘I have only been once through my travels and I have been to the Monestary of Archangel Michael. It is very stunning. So, it seems at such a young age you are quite the little traveller.’ He replied with his father being some kind of merchant and a successful business man, which made me slightly uncomfortable when he started talking about his home. Three-story, four bathroom, seven bedroom, attic, basement, everything he descibed was so extravegant and luxurious. We had just started disussing that he is a lonely-child and his mother is a professor in science and ex-model when, Firefly finally makes her entrance.

They go into the lounge area and turn on the TV with a few books and pens scattered on the coffe table. It is already 6:00 and I start making dinner, I decided to make a traditional favourite of mine, пельмени, pronounced pelmeni. It is made with minced meat filling of beef and lamb, wrapped in thin dough with a seasoning of garlic, pepper and onion.

Dinner is finally ready, I also made some wild rice and a garden salad of rocket, iceberg lettuce, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, with a dressing of extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper, balsamic vinegar and a small portion of onion. We all sat down and ate, I was so flattered when Alexi went back for seconds, while Firefly just looked at him with a shocked face when she saw him addingon to his plate most of the pelmeni. There wasn’t much discussion, mostly eating and drinking at the table.

We finished and everyone had placed their plates in the sink, Firefly offered to load the dishwasher, but I let her off the hook this time because of Alexi. (YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT MISHKA, THERE IS A PLATE IS THE OVEN FOR HER (-: )

The conference…

First things first, I went to Firefly’s school after almost getting there late because of her getting ready. She was temporarily suspended until the meeting was appointed.

What really aggrevated me was whilst in the car, Firefly was so upset her nerves got the better of her and she was so furious. We began talking about things at school, what’s bothering her so much as to not being able to concentrate and this Russian boy at her school whom she had bonded with. His name is Alexi, he is in the same year level just slightly older than her. She made him sound like one of the biggest angels, who would do almost anything for her.

We finally get to the office and I told the receptionist we had an appointment and who we needed to see. While waiting, I could see Firefly was still angry over the fact that while no one knows about our past, she still can’t help but put her opinion across about everything. The principal eventually came and brought us into a small conference room, in there were that girl and her parents.

Long story short, it is resolved. The girl began crying and being such a good actress, she had the sympathy of her parents (of course), but the principal (THANK GOD!!) wasn’t phased at all. I had actually made an appointment with the principal a few weeks ago for today straight after this, which was ironic. After Firefly recieved a strong warning and a conduct card, it was over. After we were finished I told Firefly to go and apologise to the girl, she did with great hestitation and force (meaning, she forced herself to be nice, very nice). When she came back, I told her to go and sit in the car, she hestitated and gave me a look of suspicion. I told her plainly, ‘I am not finished with your principal.’ (All in Russian.) I went back inside and sat down patiently. It took the principal about ten minutes which was quite rude because he knew we had another appointment and he did not inform me of him needing to do anything else. We are now back into the conference room, he asks me, ‘So, what did you need from me?’ I took one long deep breath and began, ‘I need to advise you about my sisters past. Coming from Russia it is hard to keep a job and earn enough to support yourself, let alone your faimly.’ ‘I understand, I…’ I just had to cut and tell him straight out, ‘No, I don’t think you do understand. My sister has been through alot, and concerning the subject of her class the other day, I want to inform you that, we have had experiences with people who have been and are still in that “industry”. I am not trying to justify what she did was right but, her classmates should have known to not speak that way about things they do not understand. And another issue, why was the teacher or supervisor not doing anything when Firefly was clearly upset before the fight took place?’ He just looked at me utterly stunned. After two minutes he looked back at me and said, ‘I had no idea and I am sorry on behalf of her teacher and my school. Regarding why Firefly’s teacher did nothing, I will be dealing with him and I will hold this conversation in complete confidence, you have my word. I will just inform Firefly’s teachers to tread lightly when having a discussion on things revolving around these “issues”.

I said, ‘Thank you for your time and I hope we will not have to see each other like this in future.’ ‘I hope not either.’ We stood up out of our seats, shook hands and I left. As I was walking to the car, there Firefly was in the back seat crying. I walked with a fast pace to the car, go into the driver’s side and started driving off. When we stopped at the lights, I looked in my rear-view mirror and softly said, ‘Are you better now or would you like to talk bout it further?’ She raised her head to meet my gaze and shook her head. To not seem as though I wanted to disturb her I nodded and let the conversation go…’It’s not fair why people like us can’t state our opinion without being judged or looked at like a потаскушка, a slut?’ I had never seen an individual with such a confused face, I didn’t want to really tell her, “Oh, just because people consider you a slut for doing something out of your control, shouldn’t mean not to state your opinion. Who cares what other people think?” But I knew, I knew what she was thinking, I knew what she meant. Instead, I said to her the most reasonable thing that popped into my head, ‘You can’t because people who don’t understand, will look at you differently because they do want to know what happened and why someone could permit such a fate on another person. But, then again, they don’t want to know about it because to them it is unbelievable.’ We finally went home and she went to sleep in my bed.

Poor thing, Firefly snapped when a girl in her class said that all girls who are sold into slavery are sluts and deserve to be beaten. (Now for those of you who have not read the ‘Past’ page, Firefly has witnessed certain events and knows people who have been in those situations.) As Firefly was defending the girls who are put in those positions, that pest of a girl suggested that all of her friends back home in Russia are all sluts and are in such an industry. I don’t applaud what Firefly did, but she had the right to do what she did. Now, I need to see the principal and the girl’s parents to see what actions will be taken, now she is suspended until the issue is resolved.

Gosh, Firefly!

Oh my goodness, these young people today think they rule everything. Firefly was in trouble again for fighting. I am yet to find out why, but honestly, when I went to school, I never was in a fight, I was a B+ – A grade student.

Speaking of which, she has just gotten home, excuse me…

I DISLIKE my professor…

Today was terrible, I have never been so frustrated with such a person in my life. My professor at my college told me that I should be in a Hairdressing class instead of law because it is too much for my brain to handle. She only does this to me which is driving me absolutely insane. It is as if she is making an example of me, I go two, I repeat, two questions wrong on a test on where this single parent is abusing their right to centrelink wages. Excuse me, if I think their situation is slightly plausible because they are struggling between two jobs (which I can relate to), three kids and a mortgage, they have bills up to their knees. I don’t even see the logic in this being on a test for law when the question clearly stated, “What is the problem and what is your opinion?”
